back!

Spring has finally arrived in Zurich! Crocuses, snowdrops and daisies are blooming everywhere and the tulips and jonquils are growing slowly but steadily and will surely fill the flower beds with colours soon.

We have just arrived back from a small break in Germany where we celebrated both a 60th and a 90th birthday and where I took the challenge chance to visit the litlle one’s great-grandmothers. Due to the distance they had only seen her once so far which makes both Karsten and me quiet sad as it is their first and so far only great-grandchild and we would love to be a bit closer to the family. However, the trainride from Zurich takes 9 hours, so it’s not a trip you do regurlary on a weekend, especially not with a 21-month old kid.

So, after a weekend full of good food and a well-entertained child (the time at the grandparents is about the only time when the little one refuses to do anything with me, may it be changing diapers, reading books or putting on the jacket….), the little one and I spent a day in the train. It went surprisingly well, but unfortunately she got laryngitis the day after which left us a bit stranded and unsure if and when we could dare to travel back to Switzerland. We then traveled bit by bit, which was not perfect but still better than doing everything on one day – still, both the little one and I were relieved when we finally arrived back home again. Now, after some good and undisturbed sleep, everything is fine again. We enjoy our first work in the garden, started this years sandbox-season and are looking forward to various spring activities! I’ll be back with more soon!

new view from our flat (or: slightly pathetic description of what happened today)

For the time being, the whole, heartbreaking tree desaster around our buildings has come to its end. Or better: the trees’ end.

And even though I had already admitted defeat, I still had to take another little frustrating defeat to make this whole business complete.

Last week, all doomed trees were marked (which was pretty much 90 per cent of all trees around our building). Even the three tall fir trees behind our neighbouring building were marked although so far noone ever mentioned that these trees were supposed to be cut down too. It surprised me because after all I am a member of the committee regarding this whole re-design of the estate. I already suspected that, after my last discussions regarding this whole tree-cutting-business, the managing board might prefer to just not inform us in order to avoid more discussions. Still, I went to the caretaker and asked:

“So, I noticed that the big fir trees are marked as well. Are they going to be cut down too?”

“Yes, they are. You know, when the guy from the garden company and I were marking the trees we looked at them and noticed that it is never going to be as cheap as now to cut it down. All the big machinery will already be here, so I decided these tree can go as well.”

“Oh..did they have a desease like the other ones?”

“No. But I mean, look at them! They are huge!”

“Oh?”

“I bet they are more than ten meters high!”

“…”

“And they don’t really look nice either!”

What can I say? You just can’t argue about trees with Swiss people.

So today, the big machinery came and within two hours our estate was cleared of all the trees. It was admittedly quite unsettling to watch it. The caretaker suggested with a smirk that I should stay inside all day so I don’t break into tears which I would have loved to answer with a scornful, evil eye, but I was too busy thinking about the itssocheapweshouldtakethechanceandcutmoretrees-approach. And you know, he was right – even while watching them from our window, I couldn’t help but shed a tear or two. It took them ten minutes to get completely rid of the two birch trees (while the little one and I were having breakfast). One of them had to go because it was rotten. The other one had to go because the managing board suspected that it might be rotten too. My suggestion to first check before we cut it off was disposed with the argument that it is definitely rotten because it grew so close to the other one. Turned out today that the tree was perfectly healthy.

It took them another ten minutes to cut off the three big firs (while I was having a shower). So efficient! So fast! It was pathetic. And it didn’t help that the little one was watching and shouting with a pitiful expression “off! off!” (ab! ab!) all the time. It really reminded me of Dogmatix…

So, we now have a very open area around our house. With open, undisturbed views over the soccer field, the industrial area and the neighbouring houses. The flat is definitely brighter, I admit. And I can check out our caretakers flat now.

I guess I will wait for the new trees to be planted and I hope that they’ll compensate. Karsten reminds me of the piano I bought as exchange for all the trouble. I’ll go now and play. Forest Scenes by Robert Schumann. Ha.

Fahr Abbey

Somehow, this winter is taking far too long for my taste. Although I am usually more a person that prefers travelling north instead of south, I really don’t like this time of transition between winter and spring.

We are therefore trying to make the best of every halfway sunny afternoon and I have written a long list of trips I am planning to do as soon as the weather allows us to be outside for more than an hour without having to look for a place to warm up again.

Sunday started with the usual grey mist that is so common for this region during wintertime. After the lunch nap of the little one, it started to look a bit brighter though and we hoped that the sun would make its way through, so we took the bus, and then another bus, and went to Fahr Abbey.

Fahr Abbey is a small monestary which dates back to the 12th century and is nowadays run by around 25 Benedictine nons. It is situated along the Limmat (which is the river that runs through Zurich) and being nestled between green meadows and the river it looks quite pictoresque so one could almost forget that the highway and the next industrial area is just around the corner. The complex includes, among others, the main church, a small chapel, a cementary and the main buildings, and also a restaurant and a farm with various animals – which was the reason we chose to go there with the little one. There is also a monastery shop which looked quite promising as they sell locally produced products there, but unfortunately it is closed on Sundays. However, it is a really nice mixture for a family afternoon trip, I think, and we will definitely go there again on a warmer day (as soon as the sun set, it got icy again and it took both Karsten and me the whole evening to warm up again…never underestimate the temperatures in February!).

happy friendship day

Like last year we are still no big friends of Valentines Day….following up on the Finnish tradition on the 14th of February we do, however, wish all of our friends a Happy Friendship Day!! It is great to have you in our lives!

The weather in Zurich surprisingly showed itself from its best side today. It was such a beautiful day, causing real spring fever despite the patches of snow which are still around, so we took the train to Zurich and went for a walk along the lakeside. No matter when you are going for a walk along lake Zurich, it’s always crowded – it’s a place to relax, to enjoy, to listen to street musicians, to wander around and of course to see and be seen. On good days you have a beautiful view over the lake with the outline of the snowy mountains in the background (though today they were a bit misty). Now add a big, first ice-cream of the year and it’s perfect. So perfect one can even forget the numerous little tantrums of the offspring (something I’ll never understand: how can you throw a tantrum if you were just fed with ice-cream waffles??).

As soon as the sun set, it got real chilly again so after a proper airing of the flat to get rid of the winter fug we switched on the heating again and I might end the day with a hot chocolate. But oh, I do hope that we’ll have a few more sunny days coming up – it makes such a difference!!!

anticipation

Spotted! The first daffodils are fighting their way through the snow. Spring can’t be far away even if it doesn’t feel like it yet, and I suddenly feel I should dig out our gardening plans for this year (I know I have them somewhere as we were already motivated to plan everything last autumn when the garden was getting ready for winter, but somehow they got buried underneath other stuff). I am so looking forward to start working in the garden again – such a pleasant anticipation. Let’s see if how the little one will spend her time in the garden this summer and whether the plants will actually have a chance to grow with her doing the weeding.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Another pleasant anticipation just turned into reality today: our new dining table finally arrived! It’s one of the things we bought ourselves as a wedding gift. Since most of our furniture forms a wild mix of materials and styles and is based on a student income we thought we slowly start investing into some proper solid wood pieces that will hopefully accompany us for the next decades. So far, our dining table consisted of a press board with aluminium legs which served me as a desk during my time at university. Not the greatest piece of furniture, really. But now…oh boy! Solid beech, beautiful colour and so much more spacious. While our guests had to serve themselves in the kitchen when they were invited for dinner, we can now place the food on the table! Fascinating! Oh, and the wooden smell! I hope it’ll last at least for a couple of days! It already feels like one of the centres of our family life and I hope we’ll have countless happy, inspiring, delicious and social moments at this table.

The evening turned out to be promising too. While Karsten went to hear Alt-J in Winterthur, I had a big moment of success with the little one who fell asleep without me sitting next to her for the first time in her life. So far, she always needed one of us to hold her hand until she was sleeping. We did try the method where you leave the child alone for two, then three, then four minutes and so on even if it is crying, but the little one would never even lay down without us sitting next to her, so we thought that it doesn’t make sense to let her cry and we hoped that one day she’ll feel comfortable enough to fall alseep on her own accord. Looks like we are on the right way!

Now I am relaxing on the couch, trying to do some knitting (maybe I’ll manage to finish the scarf for the little one before the winter is gone). So, all is good! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

our love-hate relationship

Yes! We are back! Back online!

When we woke up on Saturday morning, we suddenly discovered that our internet connection was broken. And while we always enjoy a holiday without internet or cell phone connection (back to the good old basics…books and talking to each other and that old-fashioned stuff!), it is always appaling to see how much we rely on internet in our daily life. Starting with the simple fact that we don’t have a landline, just cell phones, and these cell phones, guess what, can only be topped up online.

To be honest, our relationship with our internet company has been….mh…difficult. The company might not be aware of it, but we do have a love-hate relationship depending on whether we need them or not (we love them if everything is fine, but god forbid if there is a problem and we rely on their service…).

See, when we rented our first flat in Zurich, Karsten wanted to make sure to have internet access as soon as we moved in. I agreed because despite the fact that I am always behind when it comes to technology I do appreciate internet when moving to a new country. So he contacted the company and bought a glass fiber access about a month before we moved there.

We waited. And waited.

A month later, we moved in and the glass fiber cable still hadn’t arrived. When we contacted them, they told us that yes, they sold the glass fiber access, but actually they don’t have the right hardware for it yet (actually, they only told us that after the fourth or fifth time of calling). So they basically sold us something that they didn’t have.

At this point I should probably mention that their service hotline is not for free and considering the long waiting loop one call costed us around 30 CHF.

We tried to ensure that we didn’t have to pay the internet bills in consideration of the fact that we didn’t have internet.

Two weeks later, when another deadline of delivering the hardware had passed, they told us that they had in fact received some hardware in the meantime, but it turned out to be incompatible with their requirements, and thus needed to be replaced.

We waited. And waited.

One month later, the glass fiber finally arrived. And the internet? Still didn’t work.

We called the service hotline (30 CHF) and were told that we probably broke the cable. So we bought a new one (for 30 CHF). The internet still didn’t work.

We called the service hotline again (30…well, you know). They told us that the modem might be broken and we should send it in for them to check (10 CHF postage). Turned out the modem was just fine.

We called the service hotline again (…). The company decided to send a technician, but we were kindly told that, in case it turns out to be a problem caused by us, we are supposed to pay the technician (and let me tell you that technicians have a very good hourly wage in Switzerland!). Karsten told them that there are two ends of the cable which both look different, one fits in the socket in the wall, and one in the router, and that he is not entirely sure as to where he could have possibly gone wrong (he was getting annoyed at the times, with episodes of resignation and moments of bewildering amusement (those were admittedly scarce at the time)). He also asked whether that would mean that if it turned out to be the companys fault, we would be reimbursed for our costs, making their request reciprocal.. As you might guess, that was not the case!

Well, the technician found out that there was a problem outside of our building and that he couldn’t fix it. We waited one week for the problem to be solved. And? Did the internet finally work? Nope….

You might notice that this whole process slowly started to be absolutely absurd. Two years before, Karsten had spent a semester abroad in Tanzania. That was before Tanzania got the first submarine internet cable. Still, he had internet access within a week (yes, it broke down every two minutes and yes, there were ants living in his laptop but still…).

Well, at the beginning of June, about three months after we signed the internet contract, we got our first bill for our internet access. And no, the internet didn’t work!

Another week or two later, I called the service hotline (…) and a guy finally talked me through the configuration process. When I was one click away to finish it, I ran out of money on my cell phone (what shall I say…another 30 CHF). I finished the configuration and YES! FINALLY!! IT WORKED!!

Since we had already spent enough money on the service hotline I didn’t call back after I topped up my cell phone. After all, they had our phone number and our contact details so if they were interested in whether their customers are satisfied they could as well call us!

One week later, one week full of beautifully working internet access, our internet suddenly didn’t work again. We got a message from the company, informing us that they didn’t hear back from us whether it is working or not. So they changed the whole configuration again from DHCP to PPPoE, in order to be able to monitor us. What they didn’t send us were the details on what they did or how to proceed with the new configuration. And it was a Saturday, so we had to wait until Monday to call them. Again.

Well…

It only took us 3.5 months. It has been working ever since. Until last weekend. Of course, they still don’t have a service hotline for weekends. And the service hotline still isn’t free of charge. But we got away with less than 5 CHF for each call this time. And with only four days without internet. Let’s hope we’ll now have another long period full of love for our internet company!

Our snowman is now standing guard next to a mighty fortress (or, as the grandchildren of our neighbours see it, a supermarket…) which can be reached via bob run. This sunny afternoon this week was definitely a moment to pause and remember as sunshine is a very rare occurence right now.

cake delivery service for mamas

If you are very motivated in the morning,

and if you have the right ingredients,

and if you have a toddler that loves baking,

then you should bake a cake!

And if, in the afternoon, the sun comes out after weeks of grey sky,

and if you feel like going for a long walk,

and if you live in a country with milk boxes adjacent to the letter boxes (used for parcels nowadays),

and if you have a friend that is 7 months pregnant,

and if you have another friend with a new-born child and accordingly sleepless nights,

and if you have another friend with a feverish toddler who can’t leave the house,

then you should start a cake delivery service.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

(And if you then manage to keep your child from eating all the cake on the way and if you manage to avoid a bladder infection because the weather was somehow colder than imagined, and if the cake has been distributed all over town at the end of the afternoon , then it can be called a very successful day!)

Note: It is extremly difficult at the moment to take a picture of the little one that is not blurry. On this one she is drinking her evening milk bottle – a ritual which is supposed to calm her down but somehow she never manages to sit still, not even for a second. The minutes before she is supposed to go to bed are among the most active of the whole day…
