An Tag zwei unseres langen Wochenendes ging es an die Nordsee. Ursprünglich wollten wir uns die Seehundstation in Friedrichskoog anschauen, aber da die Seehundsaison gerade erst beginnt, heben wir uns das für später auf. Stattdessen haben wir uns ins Auto gesetzt, Pippi Langstrumpf angemacht und sind zum Multimar Wattforum in Tönning gefahren. Nach etwas mehr als einer Stunde war das Land platt und wir am Ziel – das ist echt lustig, dass wir nun Tagesausflüge an sowohl die Ost- als auch die Nordsee machen können!

Das Multimar Wattforum ist ein sehr kinderfreundliches, interaktives Museum zum Thema Nordsee und das Wattenmeer, das immerhin vor ein paar Jahren in die Liste des Weltnaturerbes aufgenommen wurde (da habe ich noch in dem Bereich gearbeitet…hach, das waren noch Zeiten!!). Es es vermittelt auf ganz tolle Weise viele verschiedene Themen des Nationalparks! Mit zwei kleinen Kindern unter vier (noch) hat man zwar nicht die Muße, sich die gesamte Ausstellung anzuschauen, aber es war viel dabei, was sowohl die Große als auch den Kleinen fasziniert hat. (Beide standen zum Beispiel minutenlang vor einem ausgestopften Seeadler der gerade eine Ente erlegt hatte und der Kleine machte dauernd beeindruckt “uuuuuh! uaaaahhh!!”. Zu süß!). Es gibt viele Aquarien, Querschnitte vom Watt, Informationen zur Entstehung des Wattenmeeres, Tiere an der Nordsee, Fischerei und und und…sogar eine Walaustellung mit einem lebensgroßen Pottwalmodell. Besonders gefallen hat der Großen der kleine schummrige Raum, in dem man sich auf eine Liege legen und verschiedenen Walgesängen lauschen konnte. Und dass sie einen Seestern streicheln durfte. Und das Spielzimmer für Kleinkinder. Denn für unter 6jährige gibt es ein kleines Spielzimmer mit Bällebad und kuscheliger Höhle, sodass man als Erwachsener tatsächlich auch ein bisschen alleine die Ausstellung anschauen kann. Also echt gut durchdacht für Familien und mit ganz viel zum Anfassen und Ausprobieren (und demnach so gar nicht typisch für die deutsche Museumslandschaft).

Highlight war aber sowieso der dazugehörige Spielplatz mit Leuchtturm, Pottwal, Fischkutter und Hallig und viel Wasserspaß….Dort haben wir mindestens ebenso viel Zeit wie in der Ausstellung verbracht. Man konnte von dort sogar zuschauen, wie die Brücke über’s Wasser hochging um Segelschiffe durchzulassen. Coole Sache.

Zum Abschluss gab’s noch ein Eis am Tönniger Hafen und dann schliefen die Kinder geschafft die ganze Rückfahrt über. Einen Abstecher zum echten Watt haben wir gar nicht mehr geschafft. Das wird aber definitiv irgendwann nachgeholt!

On day two of our long weekend, we planned a day trip to the North Sea. Originally, we wanted to visit the seal station in Friedrichskoog, but since the season is just starting we are saving this visit for later this year. Instead, we took the car, switched on Pippi Longstocking and went to the Multimar forum in Tönning. After a bit more than an hour, the landscape was flat as a pancake and we arrived at our destintion. It’s really awesome to be able to do day trips to the North and the Baltic Sea!

The Multimar forum is a very childrenfriendly, interactive museum about the North Sea and the Wadden Sea National Park which was listed as a World Heritage Site a few years ago (when I was still working in that subject…ah, good old times!). It covers all kind of different aspects of the Wadden Sea in a very appealing  and interesting way. With two kids which are (still) both under 4, one doesn’t have the time and concentration to experience the whole exhibition(s), but there were plenty of exhibits by which both the little one and the hobbit were fascinated. Many fish tanks, cross sections of the mudflats (so you can see all the small animals in the ground), the formation of the Wadden Sea, it’s animals, fishery and and and…there even was a whale exhibition with a life-sized sperm whale. The little one was particularly amazed by a small and dark room where you could lie down on a couch and listen to different types of whale sounds. And she was happy to pet a sea star. And she very much enjoyed the play room for children. Because for children under the age of 6, there is a small room with a ball pool and a cozy blue cave, so parents are actually able to experience a bit of  the exhibitions on their own. It’s really well-designed for families (and therefore not typical at all for a German museum!).

Anyway, the highlight was the playground outside, of course. It included a lighthouse, a sperm whale, a fishing boat and a holm and lot’s of water games….I think we spent as much time out there as we spent in the exhibition. One could even watch the nearby bridge being pulled up in order to let the sail boats pass. Cool stuff!

We finished our visit with an ice cream at the Tönning harbour and then the kids were sleeping all the way back home. We didn’t even managed to do a detour to  the actual Wadden Sea, but we’ll definitely catch up on this later this summer!
