Da Karstens neuer Vertrag in Kiel ja komplett aus heiterem Himmel kam und er deswegen seine neue Stelle in der Schweiz nicht anfangen konnte (und ich meine kleine Mini-Stelle bereits im Sommer gekündigt hatte), sind wir nun also vorübergehend arbeitslos. Das ist in der Schweiz nicht unbedingt so super, denn die Lebenshaltungskosten sind so hoch, dass sämtliches Erspartes (und das ist nach drei Jahren mit nur einem Doktorandengehalt für Schweizer Verhältnisse auch eher lachhaft) recht schnell aufgebraucht ist.

Theoretisch gibt es Arbeitslosengeld, aber das Ganze ist natürlich situationsabhängig. Unsere Hoffnungen sind derzeit nicht besonders hoch, aber einen Versuch ist es Wert. Arbeitslosmelden muss man sich in der Schweiz spätestens am ersten Tag der Arbeitslosigkeit. Die ersten Schritte muss man online machen, zum Beispiel einen Online-Kurs über die Grundprinzipien des RAV. Das Tutorial wird von zwei netten fiktiven Personen, Frau Huber und Herr Meier, geführt, die dir alle deine Fragen beantworten (muss ich während der Arbeitslosigkeit Bewerbungen schreiben? Ja! Darf ich während der Arbeitslosigkeit drei Wochen in den Urlaub fahren? Nein!). Am Ende bekommt man ein Zertifikat, dass man ausdrucken und zum ersten Gespräch mitbringen muss. Wir überlegen noch, ob die Bearbeitungszeit des Tutorials, die auf dem Zertifikat vermerkt ist, Plus- oder Minuspunkte bringt (60 Sekunden…). Und ob man das Zertifikat in seinem Lebenslauf vermerken darf.

Das Zertifikat muss zusammen mit einigen anderen ausgefüllten Dokumenten beim RAV abgegeben werden (dabei darf getrost die missmutige Miene der Bearbeiterin ignoriert werden…manchmal fragt man sich doch, ob es eigentlich wirklich jemanden gibt, der sowas wie Spaß an einer Stelle im Arbeitslosenamt hat…). Und dann bekommt man einen Termin für ein persönliches Gespräch. Der wäre dann bei uns in drei Wochen, wenn die Hälfte der Zeit schon wieder vorbei ist.

Bis dahin kann man ja mal versuchen, ein paar Bewerbungen zu schreiben. Denn wenn man das nicht tut (oder zu spät damit anfängt), dann gibt es Strafen, was schlicht und ergreifend bedeutet, dass es für bestimmte Zeit einfach kein Geld gibt. Wir sind schon hinterher, denn offiziell müssen wohl schon vor Antritt der Arbeitslosigkeit Bewerbungen geschrieben haben. Das ist dann natürlich ärgerlich, wenn man vorher gar nicht wusste, dass man arbeitslos wird. Eine Strafe gibt es für uns wahrscheinlich auch, weil wir durch “eigenes Verschulden” arbeitslos sind. Und für die ersten zehn Tage der Arbeitslosigkeit gibt es sowieso schon mal grundsätzlich kein Geld.

Wenn man sich aber erstmal für Arbeitslosengeld qualifiziert hat, dann ist das ‘ne feine Sache. Der Tagesgeldsatz ist ausserdem 70 bis 80% des letzten Einkommens. Das kann sich, je nach Einkommen, sehen lassen!

Nun denn, schauen wir mal, ob nach den ganzen Strafabzügen noch etwas übrig bleibt. So oder so ist es eigentlich ganz praktisch, dass wir zur Zeit beide zu Hause sind. Denn es gibt schließlich einiges zu organisieren!! Von spannender Wohnungssuche und Zukunftsaussichten wird dann beim nächsten mal berichtet!

Since Karsten’s new employement in Kiel came pretty much out of the blue so that he couldn’t start his new job in Switzerland we are now, temporarily, unemployed. Which is not really a preferable situation in Switzerland as the living expenses are so tremendously high in this country that all savings (aand after four years with nothing else than a Phd-salary, these savings are rather ridiculous for Swiss standards) are quickly eaten up.

In theory, you are, of course, entitled to receive unemployement compensation. But it very much depends on your situation. Our hopes are not really high right now, but we’ll give it a shot anyway.

In order to receive unemployement compensation, you have to register yourself latest on the first day of unemployement. The first steps are online – apart from ordering all the necessary documents, you also have to take a tutorial about the whole unemployement principles. Two nice fictional characters called Mrs Huber and Mr. Meier, will help you and answer all your questions (do I have to write applications while being unemployed? yes! can I go on a three-week holiday while being unemployed? no!). At the end, you receive a certificate which you have to print out and to take to your first meeting at the office. We are wondering whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing that the certificate shows the time you needed to do the tutorial (60 seconds…). And whether you are allowed to include the certificate in your CV.

The certificate and the filled-in forms have to go to the RAV (you are welcome to ignore the grumpy-looking agent….do you think there are actually people out there who enjoy working as unemployement agent?). And then you’ll get a date for a personal meeting. Which is in three weeks, when almost half of the time is over anyway.

Until then, we’ll try to write a few applications. Because if you don’t do it (or start too late), you’ll get a penalty, which simply mens that you don’t receive money for a certain amount of days. We are already behind as you should start writing applications three months before your contract ends. Not knowing that you are going to be unemployed next within a few days is not really helping, you see. And Karsten will receive a penalty anyway since he is unemployed due to his own fault. And you generally don’t receive compensation for the first ten days anyway.

If, however, you qualified for unemployement compensation, you are pretty lucky. We heard of people who had to move in a smaller flat, but who got paid for their complete furnishing. The daily rate of the compensation is 70 to 80% of your last salary. Which is, depending on the job, a pretty good deal!!

Well, we’ll see whether we’ll actually see any money after all the penalty days are deducted from the two month period. Anyhow, it’s quite handy that both of us are at home right now.
